Wingify is changing the guard. Meet the new CEO.

Eight years ago I met Sparsh Gupta, who quit his comfortable job in London and joined me to co-pilot a very young and green Wingify. Over the years, we’ve worked together to build one of the most rapidly growing startups in India.

Today, I’m delighted to announce that he is taking on a new title concurring with the challenges he’s been increasingly tackling every day — Sparsh is the new CEO of Wingify (the makers of PushCrew and VWO).

He has been doing an incredible job, running and growing VWO and PushCrew’s businesses as their COO for the past two years. I’m super happy that his new position as the CEO aligns with his ongoing contributions to the organization. His role will be focused on Wingify’s growth, leadership alignment, and continue focusing on our mission of building the most admired product company to come out of India.

Here’s what Sparsh had to say on this occasion, “I don’t think I would have learned so much anywhere else. Working closely with Paras and the entire Wingify team has been a privilege of a lifetime. I am excited and looking forward to this fantastic opportunity of serving as the CEO of one of the most successful SaaS startups in India.”

As for me, my title has changed to Founder and Chairman of Wingify. My involvement in the company remains same as it has been in the last many years — the team will see me in both offices and I’ll be available for discussion and mentorship for Wingify leadership and other employees. Even though I’ll not be involved in executive and operational discussions, as chairman of the company, my job will be to ensure Wingify has a solid leadership team, focused growth strategy, and has financial prudence.

I’ve been gradually reducing my involvement in operational and executive responsibilities to spend more time doing strategy, financial oversight, and leadership team development. This extra time also gives me space to think, read and write ideas important for the future of the company, future of India’s tech and startup ecosystem and where humanity is headed in general.

I and Sparsh see our relationship as a duo who along with the leadership team takes Wingify to the next phase of growth. Such duos of chairman/CEO are classic combinations, consider Reid Hoffman/Jeff Wiener of LinkedIn, Bill Gates/Steve Ballmer of Microsoft and closer to home (India), Kunal Shah/Govind Rajan of FreeCharge.

The reason we took this decision to realign titles is because that makes it clear to the company and our customers on who takes executive calls (and it is Sparsh, the CEO) and who takes longer-horizon, strategic calls (and it is Paras, the Chairman).

My hope from this change is that the clarity it brings gives Wingify faster speed and greater focus on execution and decision making.

¡Mañana, Mañana! SmashingConf Barcelona 2015: An Event Where Anything Could Happen

Well, almost anything. We can’t guarantee space shuttle journeys or going back in time, but we will put on a truly intimate, valuable and memorable event. Taking place on October 20–21, SmashingConf Barcelona1 will be packed with smart solutions ranging from front-end to design to UX — and a few delightful surprises along the way. To the tickets.2

About The Conference

We strongly believe that trends don’t matter, but techniques do. With SmashingConf Barcelona, we keep exploring interesting problems, smart solutions and lessons learned from actual projects. We highlight what has worked and what has failed — and why — so you know what to do next time you encounter similar problems. That’s what makes up the spirit of our conferences, and we take pride in it.

Palau de la Musica5
This year, the SmashingConf flags will be blowing in the breeze from the Palau de la Música Catalana — an architectural jewel of Catalan Modernism. (Large view6. Image credit: Pug Girl7).

It’s not just about techniques, though. We will also explore how designers and developers work, design and build, how they approach problems strategically and what workflows they use to find solutions. You’ll learn what warning signs and common stumbling blocks to watch out for, how to deal with them, and how to prevent them from happening. Think of it as a little playbook with handy rules of thumb: it doesn’t get more practical than this.

We also want to hear your stories and your experiences. That’s why we also invite you to speak at the meet-up before the event. Taking place on October 20–21, it’s an event that might keep you on your toes for quite some time. Seriously.

First Speakers

We’ve invited speakers passionate about their work and who’ve learned a thing or two from their own experiences. We’re happy to welcome the first confirmed speakers:

First confirmed speakers: Anna Debenham and Chris Coyier8

We’ll also host hands-on full-day workshops23 with practical techniques and strategies taught by practitioners in the industry. So if you are going to attend the conference, why not attend a workshop as well? In fact, if you book a workshop too, you’ll save $100 off the conference + workshop ticket price.

Why This Conference Could Be For You

The conference could be for you just because it’s very practical. You’ll learn many valuable techniques for your workflow, and you’ll meet fantastic, like-minded people from the industry. You’ll learn:

  1. Strategies for building fast responsive websites,
  2. Clever psychological techniques for smarter interfaces,
  3. Techniques and guidelines for better mobile UX,
  4. Guidelines for scalable CSS and JavaScript,
  5. Gotchas and rules of thumb when using SVG and Flexbox,
  6. How to optimize for performance and content delivery,
  7. Techniques for better lettering and interaction design,
  8. Mistakes and lessons learned from real-life projects,
  9. Responsive design patterns for future-ready websites,
  10. Avoid generic solutions with designs that exhibit soul and personality.

Download “Convince Your Boss” PDF

We also prepared a neat Convince Your Boss (PDF)27 (0.15 Mb) that you can use to convince your boss, colleagues, friends, neighbors and total strangers to join you or send you to the event. We know that you will not be disappointed. Still not good enough? Well, tweet us @smashingconf — we can be quite convincing, too!

SmashingConf Barcelona: Convince Your Boss PDF28
“Eight reasons why you should send your incredibly hard-working, deserving employee to the SmashingConf” (PDF29). Quite self-explanatory, really.

We also welcome sponsors to help us create a truly unique, unforgettable conference experience. And you can be a major part of it. We have quite a number of attractive and creative sponsorship options (PDF)30 for you, and we’d love to adjust them to your needs. So if you’re interested, please contact us via hello@smashingconf.com31 — we’d love for you to be involved!

See You In Barcelona!

We are looking forward to seeing you in Barcelona, and who knows, perhaps months after the conference is over, you’ll look back at your workflow, at your projects and at this very article realizing that it wasn’t far off after all. After all, it’s a conference where anything can happen, right? See you there!

No, Mahna Mahna32 has nothing to do with Mañana33 or the SmashingConf, but it might help you guess what to expect in Barcelona once you are there.

SmashingConf 2015: “Recipes From Real-Life Projects”

Trends don’t matter, but techniques do. With another friendly, intimate conference in our lovely hometown, we’ll explore practical techniques, design patterns, lessons learned and other tasty recipes from real-life projects. As you know, we care about interesting problems and smart solutions. The goal of this event is that everybody — speakers, attendees, as well as the fellow designers and developers watching the videos later — discover new techniques and strategies that can be applied to real-life projects right away.

smashing-flags5
This year, the Smashing Conference flags will be blowing in the wind from a Historic Merchant Hall, yet again. (Image credit6)

Again this year we’ve encouraged speakers to share real-life lessons from their projects, and explain in detail how they built it, with all the elegant and dirty decisions made along the way. It’s not just about their experiences though; we also invite you to speak up at a SmashingConf Jam Session and share your experience publicly as well.

First Speakers

We’ve invited speakers who passionately care about their craft and learned a thing or two from their own experiences. We’re happy to welcome the first confirmed speakers:

First confirmed speakers: Geri Coady and Harry Roberts7

We are also happy to announce 4 full-day workshops that will take place on Wednesday, September 16th, after the two main conference days:

A hands-on workshop on dealing with native responsive images markup in real-life scenarios,
  • “Creative Workshop Facilitation”21 with Andy Budd
Andy will be explaining how to get better at managing meetings and turn them from a productivity sink to a productivity booster,
  • “Responsive User Experience”22 with Marko Dugonjić
You’ll learn how to plan responsive projects, establish policies, develop compatible interface elements and design visuals with performance in mind,
  • “Responsive Tips and Tricks”23 with Vitaly Friedman
Yours truly will be presenting a renewed workshop with smart design techniques and front-end patterns on SVG, Flexbox, responsive iconography and responsive interface design patterns.

And as usual, if you book a Conference Ticket + Workshop ticket, you save €75 off the regular price24. So what are you waiting for?

Attendees Jam Session

If you’d like to give an insightful 20-min talk at the event, please contact us at vitaly@smashingconf.com with a description of the talk and we’ll get back to you. Obviously, we won’t accept any promotional talks. The more practical your talk will be, the better.

25

We encourage all attendees to speak up and talk about their personal experiecnes — it’s a good opportunity for people who never spoke before, too!

Sponsors, Dear Sponsors

We keep the ticket prices affordable for everyone, and we’re happy to welcome sponsors to help us make the conference smashing in every possible way. Upcoming Web Design Events (Dec. 2014 – June 2015)

The year may be slowly coming to an end, but there are still so many exciting conferences to keep in mind before we turn our calendars over to 2015. Our industry’s indefatigable speakers aren’t quite done yet!

We have to admit though, 2014 was a truly exciting year! With so much happening in the industry, conference organizers have done their best to keep you up to date. Take a look at some of the amazing events that are about to close this year’s conference season and, of course, get an early start on next year’s schedule.

Here are a few links that will also help you keep up with the newly scheduled design and/or development conferences being shared through Lanyard that have been sorted out by category:

Where Are You Going?

If you’re planning to attend any of these events, we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below! What are you most excited about? What are you looking forward to learning and experiencing?

Our next events list will be published middle of next year, so keep your eyes (and ears) open! And by the way, the Smashing team is constantly organizing a series of workshops221, as well as the Smashing Conferences222 — it would be wonderful and a great honor to meet you personally someday!
