Did you know I’m psychic? It’s true. Your favourite color is orange. You once lived on Chestnut Lane. You’ve googled “email best practices” at some point in your marketing career.
Okay, so one out of three ain’t bad — amirite?
The point is, best practices are important to marketers. Whether it’s email, landing pages or social media, best practices provide a jumping off point for a lot of what we do. And guess what, overlays — whether you’re already using them or thinking about using them — are no exception.
Overlays can sometimes get a bad rap for being intrusive or irrelevant. Often, though, these UX offenders are simply not designed or targeted with best practices in mind.
So, before you launch a new overlay…

What would you think if you wound up on this landing page?
Check out some of the terms being used:
“The Next Generation of Awesome”
“Bleeding edge solution”
“Age of disruption”
“World class features”
Might your BS detector start going off?
These words are superlatives — meaningless filler. The language is flowery (and not in a good way).
And while this is an extreme example, jargonistic, superlative-laden landing pages are everywhere.
They lack specificity and don’t drive home any message. They aren’t persuasive and their unique value proposition is a blur. They make people feel lost — like they just crawled out of a fallout shelter for the first time in 35 years.
Wait, where am I?
The worst part? You could have meaningless drivel on your landing page and not even know it.
No sweat. We created a Chrome extension that can help (props to Henneke Duistermaat who inspired this whole idea with her post 17 Words to Stop Using on Your Landing Pages).
Here’s how it works:
- Download and install Unbounce’s Dejargonator Chrome Extension
- Run it on any landing page or website — offending phrases will be highlighted in red. (You can test it on this extra sleazy page here.)
- Hover over the red text and see what’s wrong:
- Finally, update your page to be
- Less sleazy and superlative-y
- More specific (and thereby more persuasive)
Simple enough? Download the plugin below.

The admin area is the heart of any WordPress-powered website. It’s where everything is controlled and where admin, editors, authors and contributors publish content to posts, pages and other custom post types. The default features of WordPress are fine for some website owners, although you may find that certain features need to be improved and others need to be added.
Thankfully, the core features of WordPress can easily be extended with plugins.

After search engines, social media services are the second biggest source of traffic. Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have established themselves as the most heavily used social sharing websites, with Digg, StumbleUpon and LinkedIn not far behind.
While people will always find a way to share great articles, how well social media is integrated in your website plays a big part in how much social media traffic you attract. Today we’ll look at some of the best social media plugins for WordPress.

To get you really excited about CSS3, last month we announced the CSS3 Design Contest and encouraged designers to experiment and get creative with CSS3. As expected, we have received many creative and original submissions. To choose the winners of the contest, we considered the originality of the technique or approach and its uniqueness. The idea mattered more than the execution.
This process has taken a lot of time as it wasn’t easy, because we received quite a few creative submissions: however, a decision had to be taken and so we thoroughly went from one competition entry to another.

In May we announced the Typographic Layout Design Contest that aimed to collect beautiful typographic (X)HTML+CSS-based layouts created by the design community and release them for free as a gift for the web design community. The response was overwhelming and we really had a hard time going through the designs, analyzing them and deciding which templates deserve the awards. Unfortunately, many templates were just copies of the current designer’s blog and some weren’t related to typography at all.
